CBC Radio Canada - L'épicerie

On October 21, 2009, we had the honor of participating in the popular CBC/Radio-Canada television program L'épicerie. Because our restaurant was located near the CBC/Radio-Canada and TVA studios, we often welcomed directors, filmmakers, journalists, and other staff members from both networks.

One day, Johane Despins and her colleague Denis Gagné stopped by for lunch and asked about the soup of the day. I told them we were serving dill pickle soup. They looked at each other in surprise and asked, almost in unison, whether such a soup really existed, as neither of them had ever tried it before. Curious, they decided to give it a chance. They were delighted by its rich, distinctive flavor, created by using traditional Polish pickled cucumbers.

A few days later, I received a phone call. On the other end of the line, a friendly voice invited me to appear on L'épicerie and demonstrate how to prepare traditional Polish dill pickle soup. Of course, I accepted the invitation, and just a few weeks later, the entire L'épicerie production crew was filming at our restaurant.

Driven by a passion for culinary exploration and a desire to share Polish cuisine with Montreal, I decided that traditional Polish dishes deserved a place in the heart of the city. At the time, food trucks were becoming increasingly popular, and I saw an opportunity to bring authentic Polish flavors directly to the streets of Montreal.

In 2013, I took on the challenge of building my own mobile kitchen. Before starting, I visited the City of Montreal to learn about the requirements for operating a food truck. I quickly realized that the regulations were extensive — more than 100 pages of detailed guidelines and demanding standards. Despite the challenges, I was determined to make this dream a reality.

In 2014, we officially began serving our traditional pierogi, sausages, and other Polish specialties on the streets of Montreal. Around the same time, we became members of the Federation of Street Restaurants (FRQ), which opened the door to many exciting opportunities and allowed us to participate in major public events, including the first Friday events held under the Olympic Stadium.
